Watercolor Pride Cacti Tutorial

In celebration of Pride Month, here's a fun rainbow potted watercolor cacti tutorial! This is part of @thepigeonletter's special 2 day live Zoom event on Jul 18-19, 2020.

Materials (recommended but feel free to use what you have)

Paper: watercolor cold press paper (140 lbs/ 300 gsm)

Paint: Arteza tube watercolors (crimson, yellow pale, orange yellow, yellow ochre, sap, deep green, cobalt, violet)

Brush: round #10, #4 @thepigeonletters studio brushes

White gel pen or white gouache

Let's go!

STEP 1 --- Draw your cacti in pencil very lightly. Paint shapes with light shades of green. Drop in darker green on left (shadow side). See black and white value sketch.

STEP 2 -- Paint pot shapes with ochre. Drop in darker color on left side. Add dirt & flower shapes.

STEP 3 --- Using a smaller brush, paint stripes of color for rainbow. Pot should be dry.

STEP 4 -- Add shadow with dark blue (mix cobalt with violet) . Blend with

clean water.

STEP 5 -- Have fun with details. Use dark green and white gel pen to add dots, lines, spikes!

STEP 6 -- Finish with splatter. DONE! Yay.
